Dams, Dikes & Revetments
The Matanuska-Susitna Borough Dams, Dikes, and Revetments Program is a key initiative focused on mitigating flooding and erosion risks throughout the region. The program begins with continuous monitoring of water levels and flow conditions to identify areas of concern and guide responsive planning. Based on these assessments, the Borough designs, constructs, and maintains protective structures—including dams, dikes, and revetments—that safeguard infrastructure, property, and natural resources. In addition, shoreline stabilization efforts such as bank hardening and the strategic use of native vegetation help reinforce vulnerable areas, reduce erosion, and promote long-term ecological health. Together, these efforts form a comprehensive and sustainable approach to managing water-related hazards and protecting communities across the Borough.
