PFAS Mitigation
PFAS (Perfluoroalkyl Substances) have been detected in groundwater near Cottonwood Creek Elementary School as part of statewide monitoring conducted by the Alaska DEC under new federal EPA rules that took effect in 2024. The findings were identified through routine sampling funded by an EPA Emerging Contaminants grant, and DEC notified the Mat‑Su Borough and School District in late March 2026. The School District has taken precautionary steps based on DEC recommendations and has communicated with the school community, while additional investigation and coordination among state and local agencies continues.
This topic page brings together official press releases, public notices, and supporting resources related to PFAS monitoring and response in the Mat‑Su region. While certain firefighting foams historically used nationwide—including aqueous film‑forming foam (AFFF)—are known sources of PFAS, the presence of PFAS alone does not establish a specific source, timing, or pathway. Local fire service use of AFFF ended in 2017, and further sampling and analysis are underway in coordination with DEC and the Alaska Department of Health. As new information becomes available, this page will be updated to provide context, technical information, and links to public meetings and additional resources.
