MSB008267 - Proposed GPRA Stream Crossing
The Matanuska-Susitna Borough, Land & Resource Management Division, is seeking public input on a proposed stream crossing east of the GPRA lower parking lot that could support expanded recreational access on the eastern side of GPRA. If constructed, the crossing would function as a multi-use trail connection, improving year-round access and enabling additional trail connectivity in one of the Borough’s most heavily used recreation areas. Please refer to the map showing the proposed stream crossing location. The concept is being explored in coordination with partner groups, including the Mat-Su Ski Club, Valley Mountain Bikers and Hikers, and the Backcountry Horsemen of Alaska.
This concept is included in the draft 2026 GPRA Master Plan, which is currently being finalized during the public notice period, and is part of broader efforts to expand recreational opportunities and future trail connectivity within GPRA. Information on the master plan can be found at MSB - 2026 Government Peak Recreation Area Plan Update (https://matsu.gov/plans/2025-2026-government-peak-recreation-area-plan-update).
To advance this effort, the Borough is also exploring potential funding opportunities to support future design, engineering, permitting, and construction.
Community input is an important part of the planning process. The Borough welcomes comments, questions, and suggestions regarding the proposed stream crossing and the recreational opportunities it could support. Supporting materials are available by appointment only during normal business hours on the 2nd floor of the Borough Building in the Land & Resource Management office or visit the Public Notice Section on the Borough’s web page, www.matsu.gov. If you have any comments, please mail or deliver them to the Borough offices at the address indicated above, no later than July 5, 2026. If you have questions about this request or would like to schedule an appointment to view supporting materials, call Christian Munar at 907-861-7863 between 8 am - 5 pm or you can send an e-mail to: LMB@matsu.gov (please refer to MSB008267 GPRA Stream Crossing when submitting comments).
