Ice House Registration Permit

Ice houses must be registered with the Borough if placed on certain lakes during winter. This helps prevent pollution, safety hazards, and abandoned structures after ice breakup.


Overview

To protect lake health and public safety, the Matanuska-Susitna Borough requires registration of ice houses placed on specific lakes. Registration ensures proper spacing, sanitation, and removal before breakup.

Registration is required only for ice houses on the following lakes:

  • Big Lake

  • Diamond Lake

  • Lake Five

  • Little Question Lake

  • Little Lonely Lake

  • Two unnamed lakes between Question Lake and Talkeetna Spur Road (Sec. 30 & 31, T25N, R4W, S.M.)


How to Register

  1. Download and complete the Ice House Registration Form.

  2. Submit the form to the Permit Center:

    • Must be displayed in 12-inch high letters on one side and on the roof of the ice house.

Rules & Requirements

According to MSB Code 17.59:

  • Ice houses must be at least 75 feet from the lake’s high water mark.

  • Must be 30 feet apart from other ice houses.

  • Must include a portable toilet or waste capture device.

  • All waste must be removed and disposed of properly.

  • Ice houses must be removed before breakup to avoid fines under MSB 1.45.
