Special Event Permit
Large public events in the Mat-Su Borough require a Special Event Permit to ensure safety, sanitation, and compliance with Borough Code. Apply online at least 90 days before advertising begins.
How to Apply
Apply online through the Borough’s permitting portal:
You’ll need:
- Completed application form
- Site plan and event narrative
- Application fee:
- $500 for 501–1000 attendees
- $1000 for 1001+ attendees
- Certificate of insurance (Borough listed as additional insured)
- Surety bond (see amounts below)
- Public safety plan
- Security and sanitation details
- Required state permits (e.g., ABC, ADEC)
Bond & Refund Process
Bond amounts are based on expected attendance:
- 501–1000 attendees: $25,000
- 1001–2000: $50,000
- 2001–3000: $75,000
- 3001–4000: $100,000
- 4001+: $125,000
After the event:
- A Code Compliance Officer inspects the site.
- Any cleanup or violation costs are reported to Finance.
- A Development Services Planner submits a refund payment request.
- Refunds are issued by check, minus any costs.
Exempt Organizations
The following are exempt from the permit requirement under MSB 8.55.020(B):
- Matanuska-Susitna Borough
- State of Alaska
- United States Government
- School districts
- Churches
- Nonprofit organizations (must provide proof of nonprofit status)
