Mat-Su Borough HAZMAT Team

The MSB Department of Emergency Services is also responsible for responses to Hazardous Materials Incidents within the Mat-Su Borough. A tremendous amount of hazardous substances are either stored or transported by truck and rail through our community every day. The Hazardous Materials Team is based with the West Lakes Fire Department, housed at Fire Station 73. The HAZMAT team operates as a Level B Hazardous Materials Team which focuses on identification of any hazardous materials, threat assessment, incident stabilization, and decontamination of victims and rescuers. This service relies on a staff of on-call responders and industry specialists. The team works as part of a statewide network of response systems from the Alaska DEC, Alaska National Guard, U.S. Coast Guard, partnering fire departments, and other governmental and private agencies. Our team is recognized as a Level B Hazardous Materials response team and has members and equipment embedded in all of the area fire departments to facilitate a rapid response when needed.
