Special Event Structures

Special Event Structures are temporary in nature and primarily regulated by the IFC for the purposes of approval, permitting, length of use, document submittal, location on lot and inspections. In addition to the provisions mandated by the IFC, limited requirements of the IBC must also be met. Where the structure is to remain in place for a period of 180 days or more, it is to be regulated in the same manner any other "permanent" building or structure by the applicable provisions of the IBC.

The ICC (International Code Councill) guidelines for temporary and special event structures require:

    • Time Limits: Temporary event structures are generally defined as those erected for a period of less than 180 days.
    • Safety Criteria: They must conform to strict standards for structural strength, means of egress, accessibility, fire safety, light, ventilation, and sanitary requirements.
    • Special Event Structures: Newly clarified in Section 202, these require thorough construction documents and permits prior to installation.
    • Membrane Structures: Specific rules for tents, air-supported structures, and tensile membrane structures are outlined in Section 3102.

If you are planning an event or building a temporary structure, let us know:

    • What type of structure you are planning (tent, stage, or other membrane structure)?

    • How long it will be erected?

    • Property location the event will be located in?
