Borough Taxes and Payment Due Dates
The Borough levies several taxes, including a bed tax, car registration, a business inventory tax, real property tax, tobacco tax and marijuana tax. Each of them is collected in it's own way, and has separate due dates. Most payments can be made online, by mail, in person, or be dropped off at one of our dropboxes in Palmer and Wasilla.
Curious about how taxes work, and where the money goes? We have summarized how Borough finances work in our annual Popular Annual Citizens Financial Report.
Car Registration
The borough vehicle registration tax is collected as a part of the standard vehicle registration tax through the State of Alaska Department of Motor Vehicles.
Permanent Car and Trailer Registration
The Mat-Su is the first municipality to opt into the State’s permanent car and trailer registration program for older vehicles. In Jan. 2015, owners of vehicles and trailers eight years and older can register their property permanently and avoid paying future registration fees. This is done at the State of Alaska Department of Motor Vehicles.
